Galerie Wind proudly presents the new solo exhibition of Uday Mastenbroek, a Rotterdam autodidact who brings colour, structure and emotion to life on canvas. His abstract works are an interplay of controlled lines and unpredictable textures, where dynamics and tranquility constantly alternate. Inspired by his personal experience with tinnitus, Uday translates sound waves and inner stimuli into powerful visual compositions.
The exhibition is entitled Field of Noise and reflects Mastenbroek’s daily reality: a constant stream of sounds that he tries to capture and control. His canvases are bursting with bright, contrasting colours such as magenta, turquoise, red and yellow. The straight lines and geometric shapes bring a sense of order, while the rich, unpredictable textures emphasise the chaos.
A recurring element in many of his works is the white line. This symbolises the constant white noise that is always present in his head. In addition, he uses black lines to channel the other tinnitus sounds, as an attempt to bring structure to the overwhelming sound stream. He succeeds in this on the canvas – where his hands give shape and direction – but in his head this order remains elusive. Some paintings are deliberately lineless, the Full Noises; in these you experience the unfiltered, uncontrolled power of sound.
Each painting invites you to look at it up close, where you are surprised by the layering, almost tangible paint structures and the play between control and surrender.
Let yourself be carried away by Uday’s world of color, sound and emotion and experience for yourself how visual art can stimulate the senses and tell stories.
